What Kind of Cancer Was Shea Hicks-Whitfield’s Son Diagnosed With?

Throughout baby Beau’s challenging journey, Hicks-Whitfield and her husband have maintained a positive presence on social media, regularly featuring him in their weekly cooking videos and bringing him along to events with his “uncles” Bynum and Thomas.

When Hicks-Whitfield disclosed Beau’s diagnosis on September 30, 2022, she shared on Instagram, “Just five days into our journey as parents, we received the devastating news: Beau was born with a rare form of cancer. Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare condition affecting 300-400 children annually, and our rainbow baby was now part of that select group.”

According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Center, Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) arises when a child has an excess of Langerhans cells, typically found in the skin to combat infection and eliminate foreign substances. With LCH, these surplus cells travel through the bloodstream and accumulate in specific areas of the body, potentially causing tissue damage or forming tumors. While bones are a common site of accumulation, LCH can also affect the skin, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, lungs, or brain.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital explains that the treatment for childhood Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) varies depending on the individual child but may involve surgical procedures and chemotherapy. In some cases, children may show improvement without medical intervention, but close monitoring by a team of specialists is usually necessary to assess the condition’s progression.

Despite Beau’s diagnosis, Hicks-Whitfield has continued her work as a real estate broker and is currently filming the third season of “Bargain Block” alongside Bynum and Thomas.
