Merely four months had elapsed since Hurt’s diagnosis of Stage 4 Brain Cancer, making his recent departure all the more poignant. Thrill of the Hunt Entertainment LLC, a company in which Fred served as co-owner, disclosed this somber news, revealing the shock it brought upon him, akin to an unexpected bolt of lightning.

Throughout his life, Hurt fearlessly embarked on ventures that most individuals half his age would never dare to undertake. In his unwavering spirit, he declared his intention to combat this cancer with the same tenacity he exhibited in all his endeavors, vowing to continue embracing new adventures.

Regrettably, the insidious nature of the disease proved overwhelming, and Fred passed away in the company of his beloved family, merely a day after commemorating his 80th birthday.

In honor of his memory, Fred’s family expressed that those who held him dear could make a donation to the Mike Rowe Works Foundation, an organization dedicated to equipping individuals with valuable skills to empower their future pursuits.

Remembering Fred Hurt

Hailing from North Dakota, Fred initially collaborated with the Hoffman Group, under the leadership of Gold Rush star Todd Hoffman, during their inaugural season at Porcupine Creek.

While not originally part of the group, he was sent to the location by the claim owner, Earle Foster. To everyone’s surprise, Fred eventually ousted Hoffman and assumed ownership of the claim, joining forces with Paul Behn and his own son, Dustin Hurt.

In subsequent seasons, Fred formed the Dakota Boys, and in Season 4, he expanded his endeavors by acquiring the Cahoon Creek Claim.

However, prior to Season 5, he made the decision to withdraw his entire team from Gold Rush and embark on a new venture, launching his own show titled All That Glitters.

In 2018, Fred made a triumphant return to the Gold Rush franchise with the captivating spinoff series, Gold Rush: White Water.

Taking the lead alongside his son, Dustin, they ventured into the untamed wilderness of Haines Borough, Alaska, engaging in suction dredge diving in treacherous whitewater creeks, all in pursuit of precious gold.

While Fred took a temporary hiatus from White Water after his cancer diagnosis, his son Dustin remains an integral part of the show, carrying on the family’s legacy.
