HGTV Reveals the fate of new show Renovation Aloha Season 2

Navigating the daunting realm of real estate in one of the globe’s priciest markets might appear daunting, yet Tristyn and Kamohai Kalama, a dynamic husband-and-wife duo, have cracked the code. Their strategy? Acquiring weather-beaten, neglected properties scattered across the picturesque expanse of O’ahu and metamorphosing them into contemporary, airy retreats.

Thankfully, they’ve invited us along for the ride on HGTV’s latest sensation, Renovation Aloha, which premiered on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 9|8c. Throughout the season, viewers were treated to a rollercoaster of emotions, witnessing the triumphs, setbacks, and distinctive hurdles inherent in Hawaiian home renovations, all while gaining glimpses into the rich tapestry of Hawaiian culture.

Tristyn and Kamohai Are Native Hawaiians

For Tristyn and Kamohai, Oahu holds a significance far beyond its breathtaking shores and majestic peaks. It’s where their children, Yasiel (7) and Vale (5), call home, and it’s a place teeming with familial bonds, friendships, and a vibrant community spirit.

“You can’t take a step on Oahu without Kamohai running into someone,” Tristyn shares with a chuckle. With Kamohai’s family roots tracing back generations on the island, including an astonishing 87 first cousins, encounters with family and friends are virtually unavoidable wherever he roams.

No House is Unsalvageable

No matter how precarious its condition, Tristyn and Kamohai are always prepared to leap into action, ready to extend an offer and kickstart the renovation process.

“If a house is still standing, even just barely, it’s salvageable,” Kamohai shares with HGTV. “We don’t limit ourselves to any particular part of the island when considering a purchase. If the numbers add up, we’re all in. Most of the homes we acquire are in dire need of TLC, often featuring single-wall construction, redwood tongue and groove, and overflowing with belongings. We assure sellers that they needn’t lift a finger because we specialize in revitalizing the most neglected properties.”

Renovation Aloha transcends mere property transactions; it’s a celebration of culture and connection with the people we encounter,” Kamohai reflects. “While others may see decay and neglect, we envision potential and promise,” Tristyn adds passionately. “We’re on a mission to breathe new life into these homes and honor their legacy.”

It’s a Family-Run Business

Tristyn and Kamohai’s flipping journey is a family affair from start to finish, with relatives playing integral roles at every turn. Tristyn’s father is an avid scout for potential properties, always alerting her with leads. “He’ll shoot me a text or give me a call, saying ‘write down this address’,” Tristyn reveals with a smile.

“Our family serves as our rock, our cornerstone, our unwavering support,” Tristyn affirms. “My brother takes charge as our project manager, while my mother provides invaluable assistance with the kids. Additionally, my sister-in-law, a seasoned realtor, handles the sale of several of our properties when it’s time to list them. On Kamohai’s side, his cousin oversees the landscaping company, ensuring our properties shine. Whenever a need arises, our family is there without hesitation.”

Flipping Houses Changed Their Lives

Prior to delving into the realm of property acquisition and renovation, Tristyn and Kamohai found themselves navigating the familiar territory of living paycheck to paycheck. It was a fortuitous moment when Tristyn stumbled upon a real estate seminar advertisement that sparked a newfound direction for the couple. Despite the daunting prospect of Hawaii’s exorbitant housing market, they recognized the potential to establish their own enterprise by flipping houses.

“We’ve always had that entrepreneurial spirit; we just hadn’t discovered our niche yet,” reflects Kamohai. “I was initially apprehensive about attending the seminar. They were pitching these ideas of purchasing million-dollar properties, and it seemed far-fetched. But then, something clicked, and I thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?'”

Tristyn Handles Design and Renovations, and Kamohai is the Real Estate Pro

With a lifelong passion for HGTV, Tristyn assumes the role of designated designer in the dynamic duo. She’s the creative force behind crafting renovation blueprints, hand-picking countertops, tiles, and textiles, and expertly staging the homes upon completion. Meanwhile, Kamohai utilizes his expertise in scouting and securing lucrative flips. Armed with a knack for crunching numbers, he meticulously calculates the financial aspects of each project, ensuring the couple emerges victorious at the culmination of every renovation endeavor.

Their Goal Is to Give Back to Their Community

Prior to embarking on their real estate journey, Tristyn and Kamohai led fulfilling careers in community service. Tristyn, a licensed mental health counselor, established and managed a nonprofit organization, while Kamohai worked as a substance abuse counselor and operated his own clothing store. Leveraging their entrepreneurial acumen, they transitioned into the realm of real estate, building a thriving business that not only yields profits but also serves their community.

Their approach goes beyond mere property transactions; they actively contribute to the local economy by generating hundreds of jobs through their projects. Moreover, they facilitate home ownership for locals by engaging in off-market transactions, thereby reducing costs and eliminating real estate commissions.

“We prioritize working directly with local families, often through word-of-mouth, relationships, and social media,” Tristyn explains. “By selling off-market, we can lower expenses and enable local families to build equity while maintaining our business margins.”

Kamohai emphasizes the importance of real estate ownership in preserving the local community. “When you possess real estate, you wield control over it,” he states. “Our aim is to retain local families in Hawaii. Whenever possible, we strive to influence the destination of homes, ensuring they remain within the community. Renovation Aloha is about more than just buying and selling houses; it’s about embracing the culture and forging meaningful connections with the people we encounter.”
