As production moves forward on Season 8, Jenny and Dave have opened up about what it was really like having to work while grieving—and why their longtime television crew became an important source of support.

Jenny and Dave Marrs are the husband-and-wife renovation team behind HGTV’s Fixer to Fabulous, which premiered in 2019.
Based in Bentonville, Arkansas, the series follows the couple as they transform aging homes for local families. Jenny typically leads the design side while Dave brings construction, craftsmanship and woodworking expertise to the projects.
The couple, who married in 2005, also share five children and have allowed viewers to see parts of their family life throughout the show’s run.
But the past year brought a series of painful losses that made filming especially challenging.
The Marrs Family Faced Multiple Losses
Jenny and Dave have spoken publicly about losing several beloved animals, family friends and relatives during a difficult stretch.
Among those losses were their dog, people close to the family, Dave’s mother and Jenny’s grandmother. They also mourned a former participant from Fixer to Fabulous: Italiano.
For Jenny, one of the hardest realities was that television production couldn’t always stop when grief arrived.
She explained that their production crew travels in specifically for filming weeks, meaning there are homeowners, schedules and an entire team depending on them to complete the planned work.
That forced Jenny to learn how to temporarily separate what was happening emotionally from what needed to happen professionally.
Jenny Learned About a Friend’s Death Before Filming
One experience particularly stayed with her.
Jenny recalled learning that a close family friend, known as Mr. Bob, had died shortly before she was scheduled to film a home walk-through.
Production was delayed by about two hours, but eventually the scene still needed to happen.
Jenny brought a makeup-artist friend with her for additional support and said she would occasionally step away during filming when the emotions became overwhelming.
The difficult part was that the homeowners involved in the episode were also having an important day. Jenny didn’t want their experience overshadowed by the grief she was privately carrying.
She described trying to remain upbeat during filming, only to step away and cry before returning to the cameras.
For Jenny, that lack of uninterrupted time to process what had happened made the grieving process even harder.
Dave Says Their Crew Knows When Family Must Come First
Despite those pressures, Dave emphasized that their production company has been willing to adjust when circumstances become too serious to work around.
When Dave’s mother became critically ill, there was a filming period without homeowners scheduled. Dave left to be with his family, and the production crew changed its plans rather than expecting him to continue.
Dave said that kind of flexibility extends to happier family commitments as well.
If he is coaching one of his children’s sports teams, for example, the crew works around those commitments whenever possible.
That relationship has developed over years of making Fixer to Fabulous. Many members of the production team have been with Jenny and Dave since early in the series, meaning they have witnessed both major milestones and painful losses alongside the family.
Fixer to Fabulous Season 8 Moves Forward
Despite the difficult year, Jenny and Dave are now working on another ambitious season.
In June, the couple announced that Season 8 will include 14 new episodes, with multiple houses already under construction. Fan-favorite carpenter Joe Looney is also returning.
Among the upcoming projects is an airplane hangar being transformed into a home for Dave’s brother and sister-in-law. Another complicated renovation involves lifting a structure located in a creek bed and installing a new foundation as part of a future coffee shop project.
Those projects may eventually look seamless when they reach television, but Jenny and Dave’s comments are a reminder that the people appearing onscreen can be dealing with far more than viewers realize.
