Tom Oar is an American reality TV show star who was born in 1943 in Illinois, United States. He is famous as the original cast member of the show “Mountain Men” which airs on the History Channel.

Tom’s father Chike Oar was also a reality show cast member in the US Wild Wests series in the early 1900s. Prior to his appearance in the show “Mountain Men”, Tom was a professional rodeo player and worked in that field for 18 years.

In 1981, he had to quit as a rodeo player due to health reasons. After this, Tom relocated to Yaak River Valley in Montana with his wife Nancy Oar. He started his recluse life there and later was cast in the show “Mountain Men”.

Tom Oar has been a part of the show “Mountain Men” since its release on May 31, 2012. The show depicts the harsh weather of the mountainous region of North America and the survival tactics used by the cast member.

Along with Tom’s home in Yaak River Valley, the show features other cast members’ homes in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Alaska. The show members demonstrate their survival skills in the raw wilderness and live there.

The show has been running for the 11th season. Tom hunts and gathers food in the wild and is a master at tanning animal hides.

Tom has been on the show for a long time but he doesn’t enjoy the spotlight on him. Tom specializes in a brain tanning technique that many people even Native Americans are not familiar with.

This trade of his is unique and he has gained attention for this. Also, due to Mike’s reasonable and realistic attitude, he has been the absolute fan favorite.

Tom Oar Heart Problem

Tom Oar has been surviving the wilderness for almost 40 years. He and his wife, Nancy have been appearing on the show “Mountain Men” for 10 years.

In the recent episode of the show, Tom was seen wearing a cardiac life vest. He was recommended to wear it since he is at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.

In the episode “Heart and Soul” of the recent season, Nancy said that she was scared the night before filming as Tom’s heartbeat rate was slow.

Health Update

Episode 5 of the season 12, reveals that Tom has been treated well by the doctor and the condition is not life threatening.

At the age of 80 years, Tom is still active on the show “Mountain Men” and flaunts his skills of trapping and tanning animals. In 2022, Tom suffered from heart problems, and his wife, Nancy is helping him to take care of his health.

The couple often goes to the city for Mike’s health check-ups.

Current Health update and season 12

People magazine contacted the history channel regarding the renewal of the show, to which the representative told the magazine that, the new season, season 12 of the mountain men is set to release on August 24. Despite the health issue Tom Oar was brave to film the new episodes to to entertain all his fans.
