Sue Aikens is giving fans an update after a quiet period away from social media. The longtime Life Below Zeropersonality has been moving into a new chapter following her years on the National Geographic series, while also continuing to share parts of her life in Alaska and her personal journey with viewers who have followed her for more than a decade.

Aikens became widely known through Life Below Zero, where she showed the realities of living and working in remote Alaska. Her life at Kavik River Camp made her one of the show’s most recognizable cast members. After the series’ long run, Sue has remained connected with fans while also focusing on new opportunities, including work outside the show and her continued public presence through interviews, appearances, and personal updates.

Over the years, Aikens has also been open about the physical challenges she has faced. Her life in Alaska has involved serious risks, including the well-known bear attack she survived years ago. That incident caused major injuries and became part of her larger story of recovery and resilience. In addition to that, Sue has dealt with ongoing health and mobility issues and has previously spoken about needing medical care and surgeries related to her body’s long-term wear and injury history.

Now, Aikens has shared the reason behind her recent silence.

In a new Instagram update, Sue explained that she had started a new job when she developed health problems that became serious very quickly. According to her post, the situation led to major spinal surgery. She said doctors re-fused her lower lumbar spine, specifically L3, L4, and L5.

Sue described this procedure as more major than surgeries she has had before and said it will require healing time. She also acknowledged that recovery will mean slowing down, something that may not come naturally to her active personality.

Despite the seriousness of the surgery, Aikens gave a positive update on her early recovery. She said that within 24 hours of the operation, she was already walking on her own and also using a walker. She told fans she plans to post when she can, but for now, she is focusing on healing.

Sue also thanked her followers for their support and explained that her recent lack of posting had a reason. Her message made clear that while she is facing a significant recovery process, she is staying optimistic and taking the next steps one day at a time

This was not Aikens’ first experience with spinal surgery. She has previously spoken about undergoing spinal procedures as part of her long history of injuries and recovery. In early 2024, she also told followers she was preparing for another spinal surgery. However, her latest update makes clear that this most recent operation was more extensive, involving a re-fusion of her lower lumbar spine at L3, L4 and L5.
