Born and raised in Brooklyn, the 56-year-old detective is of Italian descent. He served three years in the USMC. After being honorably discharged, he joined the New York Police Department, where Steve DiSchiavi worked for over 20 years as a homicide detective.
He and his family moved to New Springville in 1986. He was shortly promoted to detective and assigned to Manhattan plainclothes homicide division. He has since then worked many cases, but one of his most prolific cases was the 2001 murder-massacre in Manhattan that saw three people tragically lose their lives and left five others wounded.

Steve DiSchiavi made his first television appearance in a 2005 Documentary about the NYPD Homicide division. The documentary became a starting point for his acting career as it was a huge success and received tremendous praise, and even went on to win an Emmy award.
DiSchiavi caught the attention of Executive producer Jim Casey who was impressed with DiSchiavi’s appearance and stage presence.
They soon contacted him and asked if he would be interested in showing them. Indecisive at first, he eventually agreed to do a pilot episode first.
