Monty Don, the cherished television gardener who has become a household name through his long-standing role on BBC’s Gardeners’ World, has just shared some significant news about his career. However, not all of his fans are entirely pleased with the update.
For years, Monty has been a weekly source of inspiration for gardening enthusiasts who tune in to glean insights from his vast horticultural knowledge. His advice and expertise have helped countless viewers transform their own gardens into beautiful sanctuaries.
Now, Monty is taking a bold step in his career by embarking on an exciting new venture—a nationwide tour that will allow him to connect with fans face-to-face. This tour includes a special appearance at the renowned Kew Gardens, making it an unmissable event for anyone passionate about gardening.
In an Instagram video announcement, Monty revealed details of this upcoming journey. He shared that he would be speaking at Kew Gardens about the garden he has lovingly nurtured over three decades as well as discussing various gardens he’s visited around the globe. Additionally, he announced plans for a month-long tour in November that will take him to multiple towns and cities across both the UK and Ireland. “I hope you’ll join me,” he said enthusiastically.
The tour will see Monty visiting 20 different venues; however, not everyone is happy with how these locations have been chosen. Some fans were quick to express their disappointment over certain areas being left out of the itinerary—particularly those in Scotland and Ireland where only one stop each is planned—and major cities like Newcastle and Sunderland also missing from the list.
Underneath Monty’s post, one fan voiced their frustration by questioning whether this could truly be called a nationwide tour when so many regions seemed underrepresented: “‘ALL across the UK and Ireland’??? Just one event in Ireland and one in Scotland!! Hardly ‘across’ all countries.” This sentiment was echoed by others who felt similarly let down by what they saw as limited coverage.
Another fan lamented why Newcastle had been overlooked entirely: “Why aren’t you coming to Newcastle?” Meanwhile, others expressed dismay over tickets selling out quickly for certain dates—especially Dublin’s sole event—which left many hoping additional dates might be added later on: “Dublin already sold out! Might you come back?”
Despite some backlash from disappointed followers regarding venue choices or ticket availability issues—one even pointing out there were no stops planned for Northern Ireland—Monty’s announcement did receive support from unexpected quarters too. Reality TV star Gemma Collins chimed in excitedly under his post saying she couldn’t wait after securing her own tickets.
Why are people so unreasonable? What do they want? Should the man draw and quarter himself in order to please everyone? He’s only human and does have a family to see now and then! Give over will you all? He’s doing a lovely tour now. Perhaps, if it is a success, he’ll do more in years to come. He can’t go everywhere at once or his family would forget what he looks like!
And for the spreaders of false rumours, I wouldn’t say that sounds like “retirement”, would you?
