Why was Chip Hailstone in Prison for 15 months? What is he up to now?

‘Life Below Zero’ stands as a widely embraced series, shedding light on the challenges associated with living in the harsh Alaskan wilderness. Confronting the relentless sub-zero conditions demands resilience and resourcefulness, with the show’s participants candidly sharing their struggles to secure sustenance and maintain functional households. The perils extend beyond the unforgiving weather, encompassing threats like animal attacks, yet the seasoned survivalists exhibit adeptness in navigating such adversities.

Among the prominent figures in the series is Chip Hailstone, also known by his given name, Edward. Devoted viewers who have followed the show across multiple seasons observed a conspicuous absence when Chip went off the grid for a significant period. The reason for this hiatus became apparent – Chip found himself incarcerated for a span of fifteen months. The lingering question among the audience is, why did Chip Hailstone end up behind bars?

Understanding Chip Hailstone’s Time Behind Bars:

In June 2017, Chip found himself facing a fifteen-month jail sentence, serving time at the Anchorage Correctional Complex and subsequently enduring a three-year probationary period. The legal predicament stemmed from two charges – felony perjury and false testimony. The genesis of these charges was Chip’s attempt to secure a temporary order against Christopher Bitz, an Alaska State Trooper based in Kotzebue. Chip, acting on behalf of his daughter, alleged that Bitz was stalking her and had assaulted her, prompting him to take legal action.

According to Chip, he had two separate confrontations with Bitz, both of which left him fearing for his family’s safety. However, the court determined that Chip had provided false testimony and committed perjury in sworn statements, compounding the initial false claim against Bitz.

While law enforcement contended that Chip was deliberately undermining the justice system, Hailstone and his lawyer vehemently argued the authenticity of the testimony. Chip maintained that troopers had tampered with audio recordings submitted during the proceedings. Despite filing a motion for a new trial, the request was denied. Chip persisted, appealing the ruling and even bringing in a forensic audio expert for the defense.

The expert identified an ‘interruption’ in the audio presented in court, indicating an eleven-second pause. Chip asserted that this missing timeframe was crucial, as it allegedly captured the troopers’ threats against his family. Hailstone argued that the audio recordings were not just falsehoods but were scientifically inaccurate, seeking another chance to present his case.

Despite his efforts, Chip served his time and expressed relief upon regaining freedom, emphasizing the symbolic significance of holding a real gun once again. This marked his return to ‘Life Below Zero.’ The troopers assured that Chip and his family faced no danger from the department, provided they adhered to the law. Eager to make up for missed moments on the show, Chip’s family had prepared for his return, undoubtedly relieved to have him back after his time behind bars.
