Valerie Bertinelli, an actress and author known for her culinary expertise, recently voiced her disappointment with the direction Food Network has taken, a network she once called home.
In a candid exchange on Threads—a social media platform designed for public discussions—Bertinelli responded to a fan’s frustration over the increasing prevalence of cooking competitions at the expense of traditional cooking shows. She didn’t hold back in expressing her discontent with how Food Network has evolved.
Bertinelli reminisced about the days when Food Network was more focused on teaching and sharing culinary knowledge. She fondly remembered iconic hosts like Ina Garten and Giada De Laurentiis, who played pivotal roles in shaping the network’s early success. “I fell in love with Food Network two decades ago because of all those amazing ‘In The Kitchen’ shows,” she said. “30 Minute Meals, Ina, Giada… there were so many great ones. I learned so much from them. It’s disappointing that it’s no longer centered around cooking and learning anymore—but I guess that’s just how business works.”
Her remarks come not long after her own show on the network, Valerie’s Home Cooking, was canceled following 14 successful seasons. Earlier this year also saw her departure from Kids Baking Championship, where she had been a co-host and judge since its inception in 2015.
Despite parting ways with Food Network, Bertinelli continues to thrive professionally. On April 2nd, she launched her latest cookbook titled Indulge: Delicious and Decadent Dishes to Enjoy and Share. To promote it, she’s embarked on a nationwide book tour that will see her visiting multiple cities across America.
However, by April 17th—perhaps reflecting on earlier comments—Bertinelli took to X (formerly Twitter) to soften her stance slightly: ”I will always be very grateful that I was able to work for them for seven years,” she posted.
Valerie Bertinelli Celebrates Six Months of Sobriety
Valerie Bertinelli recently marked an important personal milestone: six months of sobriety—a journey she’s been navigating alongside her boyfriend Mike Goodnough.
The former television star shared this achievement via Instagram while crediting an app called Reframe as instrumental in helping maintain this new alcohol-free lifestyle. Her decision to quit drinking began taking shape during the writing process of her 2022 memoir Enough Already. In it—and through subsequent reflections—she sought genuine happiness amidst emotional turmoil following both Eddie Van Halen’s passing (her first husband) as well as divorcing Tom Vitale.
Bertinelli opened up about how alcohol—and even food at times—had previously served as coping mechanisms during difficult periods; however now facing emotions head-on has brought far greater joy into life than any substance ever could have provided before now feeling “high just off life” itself while finding deeper satisfaction within sobriety than anything else prior had offered.
