When HGTV’s beloved Bargain Block realtor Shea Hicks-Whitfield became a mother, it was a moment filled with joy, love, and high hopes for the future. But just days after welcoming her son Beau James Whitfield into the world, her life took an unexpected and heartbreaking turn. What followed was a deeply emotional journey—a blend of fear, faith, and unshakable love.
Today, Shea stands stronger than ever, with her baby boy now officially in remission. Here’s the full story of how Beau defied the odds and how Shea’s resilience touched thousands.
Shea and her husband, Terry Eugene Whitfield, were over the moon when their son Beau James was born on July 29, 2022. He arrived healthy, weighing 7 pounds and 15 ounces. The couple shared the happy news online, introducing their bundle of joy to the world with heartfelt messages and smiling photos.
It was the beginning of what they thought would be sleepless nights and dirty diapers—typical new-parent struggles. But just five days later, that normalcy shattered.
During a routine checkup, doctors noticed an unusual mark on Beau’s skin. A biopsy was ordered at just three days old. By day five, Shea and Terry received devastating news: their newborn had Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH)—a rare pediatric cancer-like disorder where white blood cells (Langerhans cells) grow uncontrollably and can damage organs.
Shea later shared how surreal it was. “We went from the joy of birth to the terror of hearing the word ‘cancer’ before we even learned how to swaddle properly,” she recalled in interviews and social media posts. The diagnosis turned their world upside down. What was supposed to be a quiet period of bonding became a whirlwind of hospital visits, tests, and difficult decisions.
From the very beginning, baby Beau showed he was a fighter. The tiny newborn underwent biopsies, regular ultrasounds, and an array of blood tests. Shea lovingly called him a “Lil’ Warrior,” saying that despite being so young, he displayed an extraordinary strength that inspired everyone around him.
Shea and Terry did what they could to keep their spirits high. Shea continued filming with Bargain Block while also tending to Beau’s needs. They kept a brave face for their son, but behind the scenes, the stress and emotional toll were immense. Still, their support system—fans, friends, and HGTV co-stars—rallied around them.
Months passed, and little by little, progress came. Beau responded well to treatment. The lesions faded. The tests improved. Shea remained cautiously optimistic but didn’t publicly celebrate too soon. LCH is known for being unpredictable, and the couple didn’t want to count their blessings before they were sure.
But everything changed in January 2024.
Shea and Terry shared the moment the world had been praying for: Beau was officially in remission. Their post, filled with gratitude and tears, read:
“18 months old and stronger than ever—our baby has BEAT cancer. We can finally breathe again.”
Messages of congratulations and support poured in from fans and fellow HGTV personalities. Egypt Sherrod commented, “Praise Jesus,” while others called Beau a “miracle baby.”
Since that major milestone, Shea has kept fans updated in small, joyful ways. She frequently shares photos of Beau playing, learning, and growing. On National Son Day in March 2025, she posted:
“To our greatest blessing—Beau James—you are everything. We love you beyond words.”
What makes Beau’s recovery even more touching is the humility and honesty with which Shea has shared it. She hasn’t glamorized the struggle. She’s acknowledged the fear, the sleepless nights, and the strength it took to stay hopeful.
Beau’s current health is stable, and Shea hasn’t reported any relapses or setbacks as of June 2025. The absence of medical updates—usually a good sign—indicates that Beau is thriving, healthy, and enjoying his toddler years.
Shea has become more than a familiar face on television. Through this journey, she’s become a source of inspiration for countless mothers dealing with childhood illnesses. She’s used her platform not only to raise awareness about LCH but also to encourage parents to trust their instincts, seek second opinions, and never lose faith.
In a recent video, Shea summed it up beautifully:
“You don’t know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. Beau taught me that.
