Erin and Ben Napier, the beloved stars of HGTV’s Home Town, have made it crystal clear: they don’t have time — or patience — for rude and negative comments on social media.
In early 2024, the couple took a rare but firm stance against online trolls who had been leaving thoughtless and hurtful remarks about the homes they design for their clients. Known for their warmth, positivity, and genuine love for restoring historic properties, the Napiers usually take the high road — but this time, they felt compelled to speak out publicly in defense of the real families behind the homes they renovate.
In a video posted directly to her Instagram, Erin Napier looked into the camera and addressed her followers with calm but serious intent.
“The comments on my Instagram have been really not nice,” she began, setting the tone.
In the background, Ben Napier didn’t hesitate to add his thoughts, labeling the comments for what they were:
“Nasty.”
Erin continued by elaborating on what specifically bothered her. She explained that many of the comments being made weren’t simply opinions about design — they were “really rude,” often directed at the people who actually live in the homes the Napiers have renovated.
“We design homes for people who really live in them,” she emphasized. “And they really read your comments.”
Erin made it clear that while she wasn’t personally hurt by the criticism, the people who live in these homes — her clients — might be.
“You’re not hurting my feelings at all, but you are being really ugly to the people who are living in these houses,” she pointed out.
Her message was heartfelt and sincere. And then, she posed a timeless reminder:
“And if you can’t think of something nice to say about these people’s homes…”
At that moment, Ben chimed in to finish her sentence with a classic lesson from childhood:
“Don’t say anything at all.”
Despite the seriousness of the topic, Erin delivered her message without anger or defensiveness. She never raised her voice or made it personal. Instead, she calmly but firmly reminded her audience of the values she and her husband live by.
“You know better, guys. Do better,” she said gently, before sharing a lesson she often gives to their two young daughters. “Be sweet, like I tell my little girls — ‘Y’all can be grown-ups and be sweet.’”
Ben then took a moment to offer his perspective on the rise of online negativity. He expressed concern that some people seem to lash out intentionally to cause harm — not because they truly dislike something, but because being hurtful has, sadly, become a form of entertainment for some.
“I’m afraid that a lot of people out there are being rude and being mean because they want to be hurtful,” he said. “And that’s the saddest thing about social media.”
This somber observation resonated with many, and Erin followed up with a direct message to those who might fit that description.
“If you have this attitude,” she said, “unfollow me.”
Then, with a touch of her signature grace and wit, she added:
“I can do that for you if you’d like. Thank you so much for being here today. I hope y’all have a great day.”
She ended the video on a high note, turning her attention to the majority of her followers — the ones who spread kindness and encouragement:
“All of you who love sweet comments, keep on being you. You’re awesome.”
To drive the message home, Erin included a caption alongside the video that echoed her Southern roots and no-nonsense values:
“As my mama would say, y’all act like you’ve got some raising.”
The caption served as a subtle reminder that manners and empathy go a long way — both online and offline.
Almost immediately, Erin’s post was met with an outpouring of love and support. Fans flooded the comments section, praising her for speaking up and defending her clients, her family, and her values.
One supporter wrote:
“Good for you calling the nonsense out! Rude comments are uncalled for.”
Another expressed their loyalty and appreciation for both the couple and their work:
“I’m sorry. I love your shows and your work. I’ve been viewing since episode one. I’m glad you spoke up. Block those people. No time for that!”
A third comment captured the heartfelt admiration many fans feel toward the Napiers:
“I can’t imagine anyone having anything derogatory to say about you guys or the lovely homes you create for those lucky individuals! I watch your show, not only because I LOVE your design, but I also love how you are! You are good humans and watching your show reminds me that there are still many out there. Keep up the good work, you two! You are 👏 ❤🙌”
