Chip and Joanna Gaines, beloved by many for their home renovation expertise, have recently found themselves under fire from HGTV fans after a controversial moment in a preview for their latest show. The couple is currently working on transforming a property in their new series, Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse.
In the teaser clip shared online, the duo hinted at an unexpected twist during one of their famous “Demo Days.” Chip playfully remarked that after years of him handling the heavy lifting, it was now Joanna’s turn to take charge. Together, they set out to clean up a neglected pool filled with leaves and debris.
The video then shifts focus to Joanna as she takes on the task of demolishing a glass wall using a hammer. With precision and determination, she shatters each pane while Chip enthusiastically cheers her on from behind. As shards of glass scatter across the room—some even hitting the camera—the scene ends with about half of the wall demolished before Joanna moves on to clear out more debris from inside the empty pool.
However, not all viewers were thrilled by what they saw. Many fans expressed disappointment over seeing such beautiful glass being destroyed rather than repurposed or donated.
“Why waste that glass? It could have been reused,” commented one Instagram user.
Another viewer echoed this sentiment: “I can’t watch! That glass could be given new life in so many ways.”
Several others suggested alternative uses for the material: “Someone who works with stained glass could have made something amazing out of it,” one fan noted.
Others proposed that Chip and Joanna should consider incorporating recycling into their renovations more often: “They should start showing how old materials can be updated or repurposed instead of just tearing everything down.”
Since 2014, Chip and Joanna Gaines have become household names through various home renovation shows starting with Fixer Upper. Their success has led to multiple spinoffs airing on Discovery+:
- Fixer Upper (2014–2017)
- Fixer Upper: Welcome Home (2021–present)
- Fixer Upper: The Castle (2022–present)
- Fixer Upper: The Hotel (2023)
- And now their newest venture—Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse (2024)
Despite some backlash over this particular demolition scene, it’s clear that fans still hold strong opinions about preserving elements from older homes rather than discarding them entirely. One viewer summed up these feelings perfectly by saying:
“It’s always disheartening when these shows choose destruction over preservation or donation.”
