Ben Napier, the beloved star of HGTV, recently took to Instagram on May 2 to share a deeply personal story about his financial hardships during his college years. In a video created for the University of Mississippi’s “Ole Miss Giving Day,” Ben recounted the lengths he went to in order to afford his education.
During his time at Jones College, Ben was persuaded by his best friend to transfer to the University of Mississippi. His wife Erin also made the move with him, and together they worked relentlessly for two and a half years until they both earned their degrees. However, paying for tuition was no easy feat.
Ben’s Determination To Finish College
To make ends meet while pursuing their education, Ben had to get creative with how he managed finances. He juggled multiple jobs, utilized free meal programs, took out student loans, sold plasma for extra cash, traded vehicles when necessary, secured scholarships wherever possible, walked instead of driving when he could save money that way—he even sublet apartments just to scrape by.
Looking back on those challenging times now as an accomplished TV personality and craftsman known nationwide through HGTV’s “Home Town,” Ben feels immense pride in having overcome such obstacles. When approached by Ole Miss about participating in their donation campaign this year—an institution that once provided him with much-needed financial aid—he jumped at the chance as it felt like coming full circle: from being someone who needed help back then…to now being able give something meaningful back today.
Erin’s Pride In Her Husband
