Becky G Recalls Having ‘Full Blown Tears’ During Pre-Show Panic Attacks

Becky G has revealed her struggle with anxiety and the steps she has taken to conquer it.

Reflecting on her past, the 26-year-old singer disclosed how she often allowed others to dictate decisions for her, only to realize later the consequences of staying silent. Speaking on the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast on Monday, September 18, she expressed, “I spent some key pivotal moments in my career feeling like I was being far more reactive to what was happening than proactive.”

Unaware that her panic attacks were her body’s way of signaling distress, Becky G confessed to pushing through despite feeling unwell, driven by the fear of disappointing others. She recounted moments before performances when she would find herself in tears, struggling to catch her breath.

The singer admitted to a subconscious struggle, urging herself to breathe amidst high-stress situations, a challenge compounded by her youth. She described navigating the complexities of growing up amidst such pressures as “an interesting dynamic.”

Becky G then delved into her journey with therapy and how it has equipped her to confront her panic attacks.

She emphasized the importance of allowing oneself to fully experience emotions, noting how the body retains the impact of one’s experiences. “The body keeps score of all of what you go through. If you don’t allow your body to feel [everything] somatically … That was the manifestation of the panic attacks and things like that,” she explained. Becky G highlighted that anxiety and depression are not standalone diagnoses but rather outcomes of underlying issues.

This isn’t the first instance where the “Shower” singer has been candid about the toll her career has taken on her mental well-being. In May 2019, she openly shared the physical and mental toll touring had exacted on her.

“The results of [touring] have been low blood circulation, muscle cramps, dehydration, anxiety, and uncomfortable inflammation in certain areas of my body,” she disclosed via her Instagram Story. Reflecting on the challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle amidst an erratic schedule, she acknowledged the need to prioritize self-care. “I really need to get my s—t together and for the first time, I’m actually taking a healthy lifestyle on the road seriously,” she concluded.

Numerous celebrities, including Demi Lovato, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jon Hamm, Carrie Fisher, and Ashley Judd, have openly acknowledged their battles with depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder.

Two months later, Becky G reflected on the impact of discussing her own struggles with anxiety and depression, noting that it has eased her ability to discuss these issues.

“I feel those things are very real for me. I never realized how much of a real thing it was, because I thought I was just expected to go through these emotions and do the things,” she shared in a July 2019 interview with IANS. “Talking about it has helped my journey. Knowing that there is help out there, that people are with you [helped me cope with it]. There are a lot of things that will happen and you will have no power over this.”
