Navigating the complex and competitive real estate market in one of the world’s most expensive regions might seem overwhelming, but Tristyn and Kamohai Kalama, a husband-and-wife team with a shared vision, have found their niche. Their approach? They seek out dilapidated and forgotten properties scattered across the stunning landscapes of O’ahu and transform them into modern, inviting homes.
Now, they’re sharing their journey with viewers on HGTV’s latest hit show Renovation Aloha, which made its debut on Tuesday, February 20 at 9|8c. Throughout the season, audiences are taken on an emotional ride as they witness both victories and setbacks in Hawaiian home renovations. Alongside these transformations is an exploration of Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage that adds depth to every project.
Tristyn and Kamohai: Deep Roots in Oahu
For Tristyn and Kamohai Kalama, Oahu is more than just a beautiful island; it’s where their family roots run deep. It’s home to their children—Yasiel (7) and Vale (5)—and it’s where they’ve built strong connections with friends, family members, and the local community.
“Oahu is like one big extended family for us,” says Tristyn with a laugh. “You can’t go anywhere without running into someone who knows Kamohai.” With his lineage tracing back generations on the island—and an impressive network that includes 87 first cousins—Kamohai seems to know everyone he meets.
No Property Beyond Redemption
Tristyn and Kamohai have developed a reputation for taking on even the most challenging properties. No matter how rundown or neglected a house may be when they find it—they see potential where others see problems.
“If there’s still something standing—even if just barely—we believe we can save it,” says Kamohai confidently during an interview with HGTV. “We don’t limit ourselves geographically; if we find value in a property anywhere on this island—we’re all in.” Most of these homes are far from move-in ready when acquired—they often feature single-wall construction or redwood tongue-and-groove paneling—and are usually filled to capacity with years’ worth of belongings left behind by previous owners. But that doesn’t deter them; instead—it motivates them to restore life into these forgotten spaces while preserving their history.
“Renovation Aloha isn’t just about flipping houses—it’s about honoring culture through connection,” reflects Kamohai thoughtfully before adding passionately: “Where others might only see decay—we envision opportunity.”
A Family-Driven Enterprise
The Klamas’ venture into house flipping isn’t just business—it’s personal—and involves nearly every member within both sides of their families playing crucial roles throughout each project phase from start-to-finish!
“My dad has become our unofficial property scout,” shares Tristyn fondly recalling how he’ll often text her addresses whenever he spots potential opportunities around town! “He’ll say ‘write down this address,’” she laughs warmly remembering those moments!
“Our entire family forms our foundation—their support keeps us grounded,” affirms Tristyn proudly explaining further how her brother serves as Project Manager while her mother helps care for kids during busy periods! Additionally—a sister-in-law who works as Realtor handles sales once renovations complete ensuring smooth transactions occur seamlessly too! On top-of-that—a cousin from Kamohais side manages landscaping duties making sure everything looks pristine before final reveal day arrives!
Whenever any need arises—you can bet someone within either side steps up without hesitation ensuring success remains inevitable no matter what challenges come along way!
Flipping Houses Transformed Their Lives
Before diving headfirst into real estate—Trystin & Kamohais lives were much different living paycheck-to-paycheck like many others do today until fate intervened leading them towards new paths altogether after attending seminar focused solely upon investing within housing markets despite initial reservations due high costs associated especially here locally throughout Hawaii itself!
“We always had entrepreneurial spirit inside us—but hadn’t yet discovered right avenue pursue until now!” recalls Kamohais reflecting back upon those early days filled uncertainty mixed excitement simultaneously knowing full well risks involved yet willing take chance anyway because why not try something new?
“I remember feeling skeptical initially hearing pitches involving million-dollar deals thinking ‘this sounds crazy!’ But then suddenly everything clicked together perfectly realizing maybe could actually work out better than expected after all!”
